Corporate income tax
Ohio imposes no corporate income tax. The corporation franchise tax (net worth/net income) was phased out 20% per year over report years 2006-2010 under HB 66 (2005); report year 2009 was the last for most corporations and from report year 2010 it applied only to financial institutions and a few affiliates. Ohio instead levies the gross-receipts Commercial Activity Tax (CAT) on all business forms (see other_business_taxes). Financial institutions pay the separate Financial Institutions Tax (FIT 10 annual return due October 15).
Partnerships and S corporations
Ohio requires entity-level withholding on nonresident/qualifying investors via IT 1140 (or a composite IT 4708). Elective PTE tax (SALT-cap workaround) enacted by SB 246 (2022), R.C. 5747.38, filed on IT 4738; election made annually by filing the IT 4738 or Form EPTE-ELEC by the filing deadline including extensions, binding on all owners; rate for taxable years beginning in 2023 and later equals the business-income rate under R.C. 5747.02(A)(4)(a), currently 3%. Change effective 2026: for tax years beginning on or after Jan 1 2026, IT 4738 and IT 1140 estimated payments for calendar-year filers are due April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 (fiscal-year: 15th day of 4th, 6th, 9th months and 1st month of following year). Change effective 2025: refundable PTE credits can be claimed on the IT 4738 for taxable years ending on or after Jan 1 2025.
Sales and use tax
Due date. Return (UST-1) and payment due by the 23rd day of the month following the end of the reporting period (monthly: 23rd of the following month; semi-annual: July 23 for Jan-Jun and January 23 for Jul-Dec; seller's/consumer's use tax UUT quarterly: April 23, July 23, October 23, January 23). Weekend/holiday rolls to the next business day.
Filing frequency. Assigned by the Department based on tax liability: monthly is the default; semi-annual may be authorized for vendors/sellers whose liability is less than $1,200 per six-month period; a quarterly schedule is listed for accounts with quarterly liability under $15,000 (the Department page lists it generically; secondary sources describe quarterly as applying to direct-pay/use-tax UUT accounts).
Thresholds. Semi-annual: liability < $1,200 per six-month period. Quarterly: quarterly liability < $15,000 (per Department sales-and-use page). Electronic payment required when annual liability exceeds $75,000.
Prepayments. Accelerated payments: a vendor whose sales/use tax for any calendar year equals or exceeds $75,000 must, in the second ensuing and each succeeding year, pay by EFT and remit by the 23rd of each month an accelerated payment equal to at least 75% of the anticipated liability for that month, with the balance due with that month's return on the 23rd of the following month (R.C. 5739.122; ST 2007-06). Safe harbor: 75% of the liability reported for the same month in the prior year; additional charge up to 5% of the shortfall otherwise.
Notes
CAT changes under HB 33 (2023 budget) took effect 2024-2025: annual minimum tax gone, exclusion $3M (2024) then $6M (2025+), all filers quarterly. Ohio has no annual report filed with the Department of Taxation.
